NEATCLEAN — Mac file organizer
Version 1.1.1 • Apple Silicon • macOS 14 or later

OPEN
Double-click NEATCLEAN.app. You may move it to Applications using Finder.
If macOS asks for access to Documents, Downloads or Desktop, allow access.
If access is denied, go to System Settings > Privacy & Security > Files and Folders.
This is a locally signed personal app, not an Apple-notarized public release.

QUICK START
1. Folders & settings: check the folders you want to manage.
2. Scan: builds the search index and checks for duplicate content and file-health signals.
3. All files: search filenames and paths, filter by type, reveal in Finder, or open a file.
4. Keep: protects a file from automatic arrangement and clearing. Undo Keep in Kept files.
5. Start: organizes loose files and sends exact duplicate copies to Trash.
Turn off automatic duplicate clearing before Start if you prefer manual review.
6. Undo arrangement: restores moved files without overwriting an existing file.
Files sent to Trash can be restored in Finder's Trash.

07 Projects
Existing nested folder structures are preserved. Hidden files, symbolic links,
app packages, system/app data, Codex folders, and recognized development/editing
project folders are excluded. Loose regular project files go to 07 Projects. Selected roots must be personal folders within your home.
Automatic duplicate removal only acts on loose files and NEATCLEAN category folders.
Review-only duplicates elsewhere can be cleared manually after selecting them.
Do not reorganize media folders currently referenced by an editing project.
Project detection recognizes common project markers; it cannot identify every project.

DUPLICATES
Nonempty files are grouped by size, then compared using SHA-256 of their entire content.
Different names can be duplicates. Identical names can have different content.
One original is retained. The source and original content are checked again before Trash.
Kept files are protected. Empty files are reviewed separately, not automatically deduplicated.
Cloud-only files may download during hashing. Large libraries may take time to scan.

WEEKLY DOWNLOADS REVIEW
The review indicator becomes due every seven days when the app is opened.
Choose an unused period between 1 and 52 weeks; default is 4 weeks.
Usage is based on Spotlight's last-used date when available, otherwise modified date.
This is an estimate, not a guarantee of when the file was last opened.
Select files, then Keep selected or Clear selected. Clear requires confirmation.
Mark weekly review done resets the due indicator. Nothing clears in the background.

FILE HEALTH
Filters: unreadable images/PDFs, empty files, installers/executables.
These are review signals, not proof of malware or corruption.
PDFs may be encrypted or unsupported. Audio/video files are not fully decoded.
NEATCLEAN is not an antivirus and does not certify file safety.
Health signals never trigger automatic deletion by themselves.

PRIVACY AND RECOVERY
Everything runs locally. No analytics, uploads, servers or account required.
Settings and kept paths are saved locally in macOS preferences.
Arrangement recovery records: ~/Library/Application Support/NEATCLEAN/last-organization.json
Scan activity is shown for the current app session.
File contents are streamed for hashing instead of loaded entirely into memory.
No permanent-delete function is included. Trash is never automatically emptied.

1.0.1 FIX: Desktop, Documents and Downloads remain usable when loose editing project files are present. Loose project files are now sorted into 07 Projects. No-change runs explain the skip reason. Verified Start arranged 689 Desktop files through the app.

1.0.2: Project files (DRP, PRPROJ, AEP, PSD, BLEND, C4D and other supported types) sort into 07 Projects. Project files previously sorted into other NEATCLEAN category folders migrate on Start. Project files are not automatically deduplicated. Existing project folders and project packages remain intact. Search type filter includes Projects.

FINDOLDER (1.1.0)
Select FindOlder in the sidebar, then click Find files.
Choose Created date or Last modified date.
Timeline: 1 month to 5 years, with monthly slider increments and quick presets.
Older than: all files dated at or before the cutoff.
During that month: only the calendar month that many months/years ago.
Custom dates: inclusive From and Through dates.
Example: 2 years + During that month in October 2026 finds October 2024 files.
Results show the selected file date, filename and folder; filter by type or name.
Only connected personal folders are searched. Personal project directories are
read for dates; hidden/app/system folders, symlinks and packages remain excluded.
This date scan does not organize files, trash files, decode images or hash duplicates.
Created date is the macOS filesystem birth date, not necessarily the original
photo capture date. Copying or restoring may change it. Use modified date when
looking for when work was last edited. Unknown creation dates are excluded.

SCAN PERFORMANCE UPDATE (1.1.1)
Quick scan reads filenames, sizes and dates. It does not hash files or decode images.
Duplicates > Check duplicates runs a separate full-content comparison. Small front/tail
samples first reject obvious differences; matching candidates still require full SHA-256.
File health > Check health checks readability separately and uses smaller image thumbnails.
Downloads > Check usage reads last-used history; this can take longer than Quick scan.
Quick scan uses modification date as the usage-date fallback.
FindOlder continues using a metadata-only scan including personal project folders.
Start with automatic duplicates ON still needs content checks. Turn that switch OFF
for faster arrangement, then review duplicates separately.
Progress text reports folder, file count and large files being compared.
Actual duration depends on file count, disk speed, external/network disks and cloud files.
